Fortunately, no deaths were reported during that period, although five cases resulted in serious medical outcomes.
“Watch your numbers,” advises a recent Harvard Medical School publication.
“If you’re taking a vitamin D supplement, you likely don’t need more than 15 to 20 micrograms (600–800 IU) per day. Unless recommended by your doctor, avoid exceeding 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) per day, which is considered the safe upper limit.”
Doctors also recommend obtaining vitamin D from fortified foods when possible, as this is less likely to cause toxicity.
