A Subtle Early Sign of Alzheimer’s You Might Notice in the S...

A Simple Smell Identification Test

In a long-term study involving more than 1,000 participants, researchers asked volunteers to identify a variety of common everyday scents.

Examples included:

• Soap
• Smoke
• Rose
• Leather

The researchers found that participants who had greater difficulty identifying these familiar odors were more likely to develop cognitive impairment during follow-up.

When combined with brief memory assessments, smell testing provided useful information and, in some situations, offered results comparable to more advanced screening approaches.

Why Early Detection Matters

Early identification of cognitive changes may allow people to seek medical evaluation sooner and discuss lifestyle strategies, treatment options, or additional testing with healthcare professionals.

Smell testing is attractive because it is:

• Non-invasive
• Quick to perform
• Low cost
• Easy to include in routine evaluations

Even though smell testing may be helpful, it's important to remember that many other conditions can also affect the ability to detect odors.
